Van Buren County Release Meanings
A Van Buren County Jail departure can have several meanings. A person may leave after posting bond, after a judge orders release, when a local sentence ends, or after receiving credit for time served. Those events can return the person to the community, but they do not always end the case. Bond has conditions. Probation can begin or continue. A person may instead leave the county jail in a transport vehicle bound for the Michigan Department of Corrections, another county, federal custody, or immigration custody. That is a transfer, not a community release.
The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division creates the best local evidence of the physical custody event. The court record explains its legal basis. MI-VINE may provide a faster event notice. Each source answers a different question, so one source should not be stretched beyond its role. A court order does not prove that jail staff completed release. Likewise, a missing name on the current PDF does not reveal where the person went.
| Event | What it means | Best next record |
|---|---|---|
| Bond | Conditional exit while the case continues | Jail timestamp and District Court bond entry |
| Time served | The local custodial term was credited as complete | Judgment plus jail release form |
| Sentence completion | The stated jail term ended | Release form and court judgment |
| Probation | Community supervision remains | Court entry or OTIS when MDOC supervises |
| Parole | Prison confinement ended, but MDOC custody continues | OTIS status and Date Paroled |
| Transfer | Custody moved to another agency | Destination field and receiving locator |
| Discharge | The displayed sentence or supervision ended | OTIS record and formal discharge document |
Van Buren County Release Record Fields
A release record is not one universal form. For a Van Buren County jail event, the useful set may include the intake or booking record, an inmate release form, and a custody-event entry. The exact labels depend on the records the Sheriff keeps. A full date without a disposition is not enough. It cannot show whether someone posted bond, completed a term, went to another jail, or entered state custody. Ask for the actual release time, release type, and destination or receiving agency when that field exists and can be disclosed.
State and court systems keep different facts. OTIS can display an Earliest Release Date, Maximum Discharge Date, Date Paroled, location, and status. MiCOURT may show bond, a judgment, time-served language, probation events, and later orders. These are not substitutes for the county jail's physical-release entry. They help explain and test it.
| Field or record | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Booking card or intake record | The Van Buren County Jail admission tied to the person |
| Actual release date and time | When the jail recorded the custody exit |
| Release disposition | Bond, order, time served, sentence end, transfer, or another recorded type |
| Destination or receiving agency | Whether another authority took custody |
| Property release form | A related acknowledgment for property returned at exit |
| Booking photograph | The historical jail image, requested as a separate item |
| Court register and judgment | The legal event behind bond, sentence, or release |
Important: A person can leave the current roster without being free from all custody. The destination field is often the key fact.
Note: Ask for the recorded release type as well as the time because the same roster removal can reflect very different custody outcomes.
Van Buren County Release Requests
Use the county's FOIA request router and choose “Sheriff's Office Records,” which includes arrest, booking, and jail material. The direct Sheriff records form accepts contact details, an incident number when known, and a clear description. It states an initial response period of five business days, with a possible added ten-business-day extension. Charges depend on the report length, the information sought, and preparation time. No flat booking-photo or release-record fee is published.
A narrow request improves the chance that staff can identify existing records. Do not ask the Sheriff to create a custom release list. Michigan FOIA requires a public body to search for described existing records, not to produce a new compilation.
- Give the full name, birth date if known, and an approximate booking or release date.
- Add the booking, case, or incident number when it is available.
- Request the booking card, release form, actual release date and time, disposition, destination, and booking photo.
- Ask for electronic delivery and reasonably separable nonexempt parts if redaction is needed.
- Request an itemized estimate before fees exceed a limit that you choose.
The successful manifest capture of the official Sheriff request form shows the county's response-time and fee language.
The form is the durable route after a person's name is no longer present on the current jail list.
Van Buren County Release Record Law
Michigan FOIA, MCL 15.231 through 15.246, sets the access framework. A written request must describe an existing public record well enough for the office to find it. The public body can grant, deny, partly grant, or issue one written extension. Allowed labor and copy costs follow the body's procedures. Privacy and law-enforcement exemptions may justify redaction, yet nonexempt portions can still be produced.
Michigan General Schedule 11 gives the archival path unusual strength. Item 11.210 lists intake records, booking cards, mug shots, release forms, property release forms, bonds, and prison-transfer records in an inmate jacket. It authorizes retention until release plus ten years. That is a retention rule, not a promise of online display or release without lawful redaction. Property intake and release records have a shorter schedule, so a prompt and exact request still matters.
Michigan's Clean Slate process can later remove eligible convictions from public view. A set-aside changes public and legal treatment, while a nonpublic state record may remain for authorized purposes. Juvenile, sealed, and other nonpublic material also has separate limits. A later blank court search does not prove that no custody event occurred.
Note: Retention schedules preserve agency records for set periods, but they do not guarantee that every retained part is open without redaction.
Van Buren County Bond Release Proof
Every adult criminal case in Van Buren County starts in the 7th District Court. That court sets bail and accepts bond, and the county jail information page says the lobby is open for bonds. A bond order authorizes conditional release once its terms are met. It does not prove payment, paperwork, jail processing, or clearance of another hold. Use “bond was set” until the jail records the physical exit.
The local bond trail should pair the court register with the jail timestamp. A person can remain on the current roster after an order while staff verify terms or another warrant. The present court should also confirm accepted bond methods because the available local policy material says property bonds are not accepted. For a named case, compare the 7th District Court record with the release form or VINE event.
Van Buren County Release Transit
Van Buren Public Transit serves the county, including Paw Paw Dial-A-Ride and the Concord flex loop. Countywide reservations can be made in advance, and countywide service is described as weekday service. The jail does not promise a ride, identify a release exit, or publish a family waiting area. Release plans should not assume those services are part of jail processing.
Call Public Transit at 269-427-7921 before relying on service or fare details. The county fare page contains both current free-fare language and listed tariff amounts, so the agency should resolve the conflict. Weekend release planning needs another option because the countywide service statement is weekday based. Jail staff can answer release-operation questions, but no official source gives a standard exit time or a guaranteed transportation arrangement.
Note: County transit is not a jail release service, and weekend planning needs a separate confirmed ride.
Find Van Buren County Released Inmates
The official Van Buren County interface is a timestamp-loaded current PDF, not a released-person archive. Start there only to determine whether the name is still displayed. If the name is absent, work through the systems in order. A current roster is useful for custody, but it is not the release record.
- Check the official current inmate list and compare identifiers carefully.
- Search MI-VINE for the named person and distinguish a release event from a transfer event.
- Search the 7th District Court and, for a felony that continued, the 36th Circuit Court record.
- Call Van Buren County Corrections at 269-657-2171 and ask whether the departure was community release or transfer.
- Submit the focused Sheriff request for the release timestamp, disposition, and destination.
- Use OTIS, BOP, or ICE only when the custody path points to that system.
Roster limit: Van Buren County publishes no verified Michigan 24-hour, 72-hour, or other recent-release feed. A similarly named 48-hour page belongs to Arkansas.
Van Buren County Recent Release Limits
The current jail wrapper loads CurrentInmateList.pdf with a timestamp query. That design helps request a fresh copy, but the Sheriff does not state the source file's update interval or how fast a released name is removed. There is no archived person page, recent-releases tab, stated online retention period, or Michigan sheriff mobile app. Avoid claims such as “real time” or “hourly.”
For a recent named event, MI-VINE and the Corrections phone line are the fast checks. The jail record and court record provide the durable trail. A date-limited FOIA request may seek an existing daily admitted or released summary, but the Sheriff need not create one. Those daily summaries can also have a shorter retention period than the inmate jacket. The dedicated 24-Hour Release List page explains this same-day fallback, while the home search remains the full named-person route.
Note: Downloading a fresh PDF does not prove the Sheriff's source list was regenerated at that same moment.
MDOC Search for Van Buren Releases
The Michigan Department of Corrections OTIS gateway covers state prisoners, parolees, probationers under MDOC supervision, and people discharged within three years of their supervision discharge date. It expressly excludes county-jail-only people. No MDOC prison is located in Van Buren County. Use OTIS only if a transfer, felony sentence, parole, probation, or state discharge makes MDOC relevant.
At the live search, set Offender Status to ALL. Search with the unique six-digit MDOC number when known, or use a carefully spelled last name. OTIS is spelling-sensitive, and official instructions allow a wildcard after the first three surname letters. Open the MDOC number for the detail record.
| OTIS field | How to read it |
|---|---|
| MDOC number | The strongest unique search key |
| Status | PAROLE, PROB, DISCHRG, or another documented state status |
| Location | The prison or supervising office, not always a physical jail |
| Earliest Release Date | Parole Board jurisdiction can begin; it is not a promised exit |
| Maximum Discharge Date | The calculated outside sentence date |
| Date Paroled | An actual transition to parole status |
The successful manifest image of the live OTIS search shows the status selector and name or MDOC-number fields.
Those fields help find a state record, but they do not turn OTIS into the Van Buren County Jail roster.
Van Buren Release Court Trail
Van Buren County's legal trail can split across two courts. All adult cases begin in 7th District Court. Felony adjudication and sentencing continue in 36th Circuit Court. Search both when the release basis is unclear. A District Court entry may show arraignment, bail, bond acceptance, dismissal, or a misdemeanor result. The Circuit Court may hold the felony judgment, sentence, probation event, or later order.
The county's case-information gateway provides separate links for each court. MiCOURT entries can include the case number, parties, charges and dispositions, register of actions, bond entries, judgment, sentence, and probation events. Online information is not a certified record and can be limited by display rules or nonpublic status.
The successful manifest capture of the Van Buren court gateway shows the separate District and Circuit paths.
Pair the legal order found there with the Sheriff's physical-release record for a complete account.
Van Buren County Supervision Alternatives
Van Buren County Community Corrections is not a released-inmate locator. It operates PA 511 programs, day reporting, pretrial supervision, and jail or probation alternatives. The jail also lists its Alternative Work Program, weekend alternative work, and court-ordered work release. These options can change how a local sentence or supervision plan is carried out, but participation alone does not prove completion or discharge.
MDOC parole and probation are separate state supervision paths. OTIS can show PAROLE or PROB, and its location link may identify the Van Buren field office. Parole means release from prison confinement while legal custody and control continue under MCL 791.238. Probation is court-ordered community supervision. Discharge is the later end of the displayed sentence or supervision. The local field office is at 212 E Paw Paw Street, Suite 20, and its phone is 269-657-8214.
- Parole
- Community placement after prison while MDOC legal custody remains.
- Probation
- Court-ordered community supervision, sometimes without a prison term.
- Discharge
- The end of the identified sentence or supervision record.
- Absconder
- A person reported as having left supervision without authorization, not a successful discharge.
Note: The county jail cannot directly verify an MDOC status that the state field office administers.
Van Buren County Release Notifications
The Van Buren Corrections Division expressly identifies the Michigan Crime Victim Notification Network and gives 800-770-7657. MI-VINE can search a specific person and provide custody-change notices. Select Michigan, search by name or offender ID, compare identifiers and the facility, then open the event. Read “release” and “transfer” as different outcomes.
Phone, text, and email registration are available. The official instructions say phone registration uses a four-digit PIN. When the automated call arrives, entering the PIN followed by # acknowledges it and stops repeat calls. A VINE event is useful for speed, but it is not the signed jail release form and is not a permanent archive. If the result is blank, check spelling and agency, then call VINE or Corrections.
Van Buren ICE Transfer Releases
No official standing Van Buren County ICE detention contract, 287(g) agreement, or ICE detention facility listing was found. That absence does not bar an individual immigration detainer. A detainer asks the jail to notify ICE before release so the federal agency may assume custody. If that happens, the person's departure from Van Buren County Jail is a transfer, not a return to the community.
Confirm the destination through the Sheriff's release record and then use the ICE Online Detainee Locator. The locator supports a nine-digit A-number plus country of birth or a biographical search. ICE states that it includes current detainees and people released from ICE custody within the past 60 days. A later blank result is expected after that window and does not prove the immigration case ended.
Federal and Immigration Release Checks
Use the BOP Inmate Locator only for a known federal sentence. It accepts BOP register, DCDC, FBI, or INS numbers, as well as a name with optional details. Results can show a release date and “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody.” Those labels end only the BOP part of the inquiry. State custody, county custody, immigration custody, or federal supervised release may still follow.
The U.S. Marshals Service does not offer a public universal name locator for federal pretrial custody. A federal court docket, the custodial agency, or a focused USMS record request may be needed. This separation matters in Van Buren County because a local hold does not guarantee a BOP record. Use the locator tied to the agency that actually held the person.
| System | Use it for | Released-person limit |
|---|---|---|
| County current PDF | Who is displayed in Van Buren custody now | No release archive or stated window |
| Sheriff release record | Local timestamp, disposition, destination | Request required after roster removal |
| OTIS | MDOC custody, parole, probation, recent discharge | Discharged records remain public for three years |
| BOP Locator | Known federal sentence | Does not rule out another custody system |
| ICE Locator | Current or recent immigration custody | Recent release window is 60 days |
Note: A locator confirms only the custody system it serves, so check the recorded receiving agency before switching to another search.
Van Buren Jail Renovation Records
The county's building-authority record documents a jail addition and renovation funded with $5.15 million in bonds plus county funds. Construction began in March 2017. The work included new booking and holding areas, reconfigured cells, security improvements, roof work, and electrical upgrades. The current Corrections page reports a capacity of 213.
This history explains why booking is a key local function, but it does not change the release search. The jail remains the sole verified adult detention facility in the county map. Its current PDF shows custody, while the release form preserves the event after a person leaves the list. Building capacity and programs do not show whether a named person was released.
Van Buren County Release Facility
The Van Buren County Jail is the one verified local adult detention facility. The Sheriff's Corrections Division operates it at 205 S Kalamazoo Street in Paw Paw. The direct Corrections number is 269-657-2171. A community release can follow bond, a court order, time served, or sentence completion. A transport can instead lead to MDOC, another county, federal custody, or ICE.
Use the current roster only for present display. For release proof, use the Sheriff's inmate release form, a VINE event, and the relevant court record. OTIS applies after MDOC receives or supervises someone, not merely because the person once stayed in the county jail.
