Van Buren County Parole and Probation
Parole and probation both allow a person to live outside a secure facility under rules, but they start in different ways. The Michigan Parole Board may grant parole after a person serves the required part of a state prison sentence. Under MCL 791.238, that person remains in the legal custody and control of the Michigan Department of Corrections. Parole is permission to leave prison under supervision. It is not the end of the sentence.
Probation is ordered by a court. In Van Buren County, an adult felony matter can result in MDOC-supervised probation under the circuit court and county jurisdiction. A probation term may follow jail, accompany a sentence that does not require prison, or continue after another local custody event. Neither status should be confused with discharge, which means the displayed term of supervision has ended.
| Status | How it begins | What it means after release | Public OTIS label |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parole | Michigan Parole Board action after prison eligibility | Community placement while MDOC legal custody continues | PAROLE |
| Probation | Court sentence | Community supervision under court and MDOC authority | PROB |
| Discharge | Completion or formal termination of the displayed supervision | The shown MDOC sentence or supervision has ended | DISCHRG |
- Parole
- Conditional community placement after state prison, with the sentence still active.
- Probation
- A court-ordered supervision term that may be imposed instead of, or after, time in jail.
- Discharge
- Formal completion or termination of the identified sentence or supervision record.
- Absconder
- A person reported as having left supervision without authorization and not successfully discharged.
Verify Van Buren County Supervision
The public starting point is the MDOC Offender Tracking Information System, called OTIS. It includes state prisoners, parolees, probationers under MDOC supervision, and people discharged within three years of the supervision discharge date. It does not include a person whose only sentence was in the Van Buren County Jail. For a jail-only release, the Sheriff release record and court file are the right sources.
- Open the live OTIS search and set Offender Status to
ALL. A narrower setting can hide a discharged Van Buren County record. - Search with the six-digit MDOC number when known. Otherwise, enter the last name with care because spelling matters.
- Open the MDOC-number link, not just the result row. Compare the commitment name, birth date, number, status, and sentence data.
- Read the location field. A parole or probation record may link to the assigned reporting office rather than a prison.
- Interpret
PAROLE,PROB,DISCHRG,ABSCOND1, andABSCOND2precisely. Do not turn one label into a broader claim. - Call the listed field office if the location or status is unclear. Direct court-derived errors to the sentencing court.
OTIS stays public for only three years after MDOC supervision discharge. A blank search outside that window does not show that the person was never supervised. Older proof may come from MDOC records and the sentencing court. For the full county-jail, court, VINE, and state search sequence, use the Van Buren County released-inmate search.
Important: A live Van Buren County jail roster is not a parole or probation lookup, and a person can leave jail without entering MDOC supervision.
Van Buren County Supervision Office
The official local contact is the combined MDOC Van Buren County Parole/Probation office. Use it when an OTIS location points to this office, when a supervision status needs clarification, or when MDOC directs a correction there. The county jail does not administer state parole and should not be asked to verify it.

The office listing is the best contact bridge between an OTIS supervision record and the local agent office; it is not a custody roster.
Note: Call the location shown on the person’s OTIS record because supervision can move between field offices without ending.
Van Buren County Supervision Status
Conditions are the rules attached to community supervision. Their exact terms come from the court order, parole order, and agent instructions, not from a generic list. At a high level, a person may have reporting duties, location or travel limits, treatment requirements, testing, or other case-specific directives. A violation allegation does not by itself explain the final result. The supervising agency and court or Parole Board record control.
OTIS uses two distinct absconder codes. ABSCOND1 identifies a parole absconder actively sought by MDOC. ABSCOND2 identifies a probation absconder under the jurisdiction of the sentencing county. Neither means discharge. MDOC lists 517-755-0855 for absconder information or tips, while questions about the accuracy of a Van Buren County supervision record belong with the reporting office.
A warrant can also come from a different court or agency. Therefore, a status change should not be used to guess where a person is held. Check the named case, the supervising office, and the custody system tied to the warrant. Michigan VINE may report a custody event, but it does not replace the supervision record.
Record corrections also follow the source of the disputed fact. MDOC’s public guidance sends a wrong court-derived fact to the sentencing court and a wrong supervision status to the supervising office. General OTIS accuracy questions can be routed through MDOC, but the local office is the practical first contact when its location link appears on the person’s record. This split keeps Van Buren County court facts, state supervision facts, and jail custody facts from being treated as one file.
Van Buren County Community Corrections
Van Buren County’s Office of Community Corrections is separate from the MDOC parole and probation field office. It operates PA 511 programs, day reporting, pretrial supervision, and jail or probation alternatives. Its office and testing entrance is on the northeast corner of the jail and courthouse campus at 212 E Paw Paw Street. The listed number is 269-657-8200 extension 2482, and posted weekday testing hours are 6:00 to 11:00 a.m.
The distinction matters. Community Corrections is not a released-person locator and should not replace OTIS. A person may take part in a local program without being on parole, and pretrial supervision is not probation after conviction. Program participation also does not prove that a sentence ended.
The Van Buren County Jail Corrections Division separately lists its long-running Alternative Work Program, weekend alternative work, and court-ordered work release. Those options can change how a local term is served. Completion must still be confirmed through the court order, jail release record, or assigned supervision agency.
Note: A work or day-reporting program changes the custody plan, but only the official record confirms completion or discharge.
Van Buren County Supervision Campus
The MDOC field office, local courts, and Community Corrections functions sit in the same Paw Paw justice-campus area, yet they serve different legal roles. The shared area can make an address search look like one agency. It is not. The field office handles MDOC parole and probation; Community Corrections manages local alternatives and testing; the courts issue and record orders.
This local distinction is especially useful for old references to Swift & Sure. The county specialty-court page says the program stopped accepting new cases effective January 1, 2026. An older docket entry may still refer to that structure, but it should not be read as proof that a new participant is enrolled now. Existing supervision and other county services remain separate.
When records conflict, start with the current OTIS location and status. Then use the sentencing court record for the legal order and the correct office for operational clarification. Matching an address alone is not enough.
Van Buren County Supervision Discharge
Supervision ends through formal discharge, not merely because a person stops appearing at an office or moves out of Van Buren County. OTIS uses DISCHRG when MDOC supervision for the displayed sentence has ended. MDOC materials describe several routes, including successful completion of parole or probation and maximum discharge from prison without parole. Death before completion can also be reflected in the broader record, so the whole entry must be read.
Formal proof may include MDOC’s CSJ-130 Certificate of Discharge, Sentence Termination, or Sentence Discharge by Court Order. Successful parole completion may also produce a CAX-115 Parole Board Order for Discharge from Sentence. A probation-discharge order may be in the court record. These documents answer a stronger question than a status screen alone.
If OTIS has already passed its public display window, a focused MDOC records request can identify the six-digit MDOC number and ask for the existing discharge document. The sentencing court may preserve the probation or sentence order on a separate track. A move away from Van Buren County does not itself discharge supervision; the assigned office can change while the term remains active.
Discharge applies to the identified sentence or supervision term. Another case, warrant, or jurisdiction can still exist. Likewise, a parole date is an actual move from prison to community supervision but is not the same as the final discharge date. The distinction between eligibility, parole, and discharge is also central when reading a Van Buren County projected release date.
Record limit: OTIS removes a discharged record from public display after three years, so older confirmation may require MDOC or court records.
