Van Buren County MI-VINE Coverage
Michigan calls its statewide service MI-VINE, short for Victim Information and Notification Everyday. It is a free, confidential custody-search and notification channel available at all times. Most important for local use, the Van Buren County Corrections Division expressly confirms participation in the Michigan Crime Victim Notification Network and gives the service number, 800-770-7657. That local statement removes the uncertainty that exists when a county is named only on a broad state page.
MI-VINE can report events supplied by the participating Van Buren County Jail. It also provides general release-notification paths for MDOC offenders. It is not the jail’s signed release form, the state time-computation record, or a permanent archive. A VINE release label and a VINE transfer label mean different things. Always preserve the agency, event, and time shown.
The Michigan MI-VINE overview describes the state service and its notification role.
The state page supports the statewide layer, while Van Buren County’s own Corrections page confirms the local jail connection.
Search Van Buren County VINELink
Use VINELink for a specific person, not as a countywide recent-release list. Van Buren County does not publish an official 24-hour or 72-hour release feed. VINE works best when a name or offender ID is known and the goal is to read that person’s latest event.
- Open VINELink and choose Michigan. A same-named county or agency in another state is not the Van Buren County, Michigan source.
- Select the option to search for an offender. Enter the person’s name or offender ID.
- Review all possible matches. Compare the displayed age or ID, agency, facility, and any other available identifiers.
- Open the correct person record. Read the custody status, location, and latest reported event rather than relying on the search list alone.
- Distinguish release from transfer, escape, or another custody change. A transfer means the person may still be confined.
- If no match appears, recheck the spelling, alternate names, state, and source agency. Then call MI-VINE or the jail rather than treating absence as proof.
The official VINELink search screen begins with state selection and the specific-person search path.
The state and person-selection steps help prevent a false match before any Van Buren County custody event is interpreted.
Note: A blank VINE result can reflect spelling, age of data, another agency, or a transfer, so it never proves release.
Van Buren County VINELink Fields
VINE is an event and notification system. Its live labels can change, and an out-of-custody result may not remain online forever. Read each field in relation to the reporting agency. For a Van Buren County Jail event, the jail is the source agency. For an MDOC event, the state corrections record provides the sentence and supervision context.
| Field or event | What it can establish |
|---|---|
| Name or offender ID | Helps match the event to the intended person; compare all available identifiers. |
| Custody status | Shows the status reported by the participating agency at the time of the record. |
| Agency or facility | Identifies which custody system supplied the information. |
| Location | Shows the reported facility or custody location, when displayed. |
| Release event | Reports that the source agency recorded a release change; it does not rule out another hold. |
| Transfer event | Shows movement to another authority or facility, not return to the community. |
| Event date or time | Provides the notice timing or reported event timing; obtain the agency record for exact proof. |
A county jail record and an MDOC record answer different questions. OTIS excludes county-jail-only people. Conversely, the Van Buren live jail list is not an MDOC parole or discharge source. When the custody path is unclear, the broader Van Buren County released-inmate lookup explains how to reconcile jail, court, VINE, and state records.
Register Van Buren County Alerts
Notification registration starts inside the correct offender record. The official Michigan instructions support phone, text, and email destinations. The method matters because phone calls use a PIN acknowledgment, while text and email messages do not use that phone PIN.
- Open the matched Van Buren County or MDOC offender record.
- Select Register or Get Notifications, using the wording shown in the current interface.
- Choose phone, text, or email and enter the destination accurately.
- Confirm the destination as prompted. A mistyped number or address prevents useful notice.
- For phone registration, create a four-digit PIN and keep it available.
- When the automated call arrives, listen to the event and enter the PIN followed by
#. Acknowledgment stops repeat calls for that event. - Read text and email notices closely. They generally send once per custody change and do not use the phone PIN.
Registration is tied to the selected record. A person with separate county and state custody records may require careful source matching. An alert should also be checked for its exact event label. “Transferred” cannot be restated as “released.”
Keep the registration details private and current. If a phone number or email address changes, update the registration through the service rather than assuming notice will follow automatically. A phone call that is not acknowledged can repeat, which is why the four-digit PIN matters. Text and email messages generally arrive once for the reported change, so a missed message may not be resent. Registration provides notice; it does not authorize access to a sealed jail or court record.
Phone PIN: The four-digit code confirms receipt of an automated call; it is not an offender ID or access code for a jail record.
Van Buren County Notification Layer
Van Buren County’s direct endorsement of the Michigan Crime Victim Notification Network is the distinctive local layer. The county lists both custody-status search and telephone or email notice through that service. When a VINE result is unclear, call 800-770-7657 or the Van Buren County Corrections Division at 269-657-2171. Ask about the named person and the source of the reported event, not for a broad unpublished release list.
Michigan also separates general VINE notice from expanded statutory victim services. Registered statutory victims seeking parole-hearing, decision, and other MDOC notices may use MDOC Crime Victim Services at 877-886-5401. That channel has a different purpose from a basic VINELink custody check and may involve eligibility and registration steps.
The local jail, MI-VINE, and MDOC notification routes should not be merged into one system. Van Buren County supplies jail events. VINE delivers search and notices. MDOC Victim Services handles the enhanced state corrections layer.
This division also helps when a person moves from the Van Buren County Jail into state custody. The local jail event may report a transfer, while a later MDOC record supplies the new prison location and sentence fields. A general VINE notice can signal the change, but OTIS is the stronger source for ongoing state custody or supervision. During the update gap, call the source agency instead of calling the transfer a release.
The county’s published VINE phone number is valuable when the web search does not return a clear match. Give the operator the name and offender ID when known, and ask which agency’s information is being reported. For a county record, the Sheriff’s release form remains the durable evidence. For MDOC, the state sentence and discharge records remain distinct.
Note: Save the agency name and event label from an alert because those details show which custody ended or changed.

A release alert is strong, timely evidence that the participating source reported an event. It does not mean the person is free from every form of custody. Another county warrant, an MDOC transfer, federal custody, or an immigration detainer can follow the Van Buren jail event. A transfer alert is even narrower: it says custody moved.
For exact county proof, request the existing inmate release form from the Van Buren County Sheriff. That record can provide the actual timestamp, disposition, and receiving agency when available and disclosable. The relevant 7th District or 36th Circuit record may explain the bond, dismissal, sentence, or other legal basis, but a court order alone does not prove that jail staff completed physical release.
If VINE reports release while the current jail PDF still lists the person, note the conflict and call Corrections. The PDF’s exact refresh interval is not published. If the PDF drops the person but VINE reports transfer, describe the event as movement from Van Buren custody. The latest source should not erase the meaning of the event label.
For state custody, use OTIS to read status, location, Earliest Release Date, Maximum Discharge Date, and Date Paroled. PAROLE means community supervision continues. DISCHRG indicates that the displayed MDOC supervision ended, subject to the full record context.
Van Buren County VINELink Limits
VINELink does not replace every locator. It is not the public locator for a federal Bureau of Prisons sentence, and it does not provide a permanent certified release history. Federal records use the BOP Inmate Locator. Immigration custody uses the ICE Online Detainee Locator. The U.S. Marshals Service has no comparable universal public name locator for federal pretrial custody.
Data can lag, labels can change, and an old out-of-custody result may no longer display. If the person is missing, recheck spelling and agency, call VINE or the jail, and move to the source record. If MDOC involvement is plausible, search OTIS with status set to ALL. Do not use OTIS for a person sentenced only to the Van Buren County Jail.
A released person may disappear from a live system because the public window ended. That absence is different from a record stating release. Historical confirmation can require the Sheriff inmate jacket, the court register of actions, or an MDOC discharge certificate. Each source has its own retention and access rules, so VINELink should not be treated as the only archive.
The Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry is another narrow system, not a fallback release list. It applies only to qualifying registrants and has its own statuses. Absence from that registry says nothing reliable about a Van Buren County release.
Confirm the event: Pair a VINE notice with the Sheriff release form or the relevant MDOC record when the exact custody end, type, or destination matters.
